Tried, Tested, and True- Men’s Button Down Shirts
September 11th, 2012
Fashion is cyclical. For decades, we have seen the rise, fall, and subsequent second coming of one trend after another. It happens in every segment of clothing, from footwear to formal wear, and from athletic clothing to the basic casual shirt.
For men in particular, these cycles can be quite unnerving. For the average man, having a closet stocked with a few nice men’s designer shirts is more than enough to scratch the fashion itch. But when even the most basic button down shirt is subject to the ebb and flow of modern taste, keeping up with the times can become a practice in pure annoyance.
Luckily, there are a few key elements which distinguish the line between fashion, which changes like the weather, and style, which, when done properly, can last a lifetime. Whether it is a dress shirt, t-shirt, or casual shirt, for men there is a genuine appeal to timelessness.
When looking at men’s designer shirts, it is easy to fall into the trap of simply going with the most up-to-date model from a recognized designer. But to be sure that a button down shirt will stand the test of time, it may be wise to look for certain classic elements. The same rules actually hold true for polos, tees, and even the most casual shirt.
For men, the key is to find a look that is, at its core, understated. Particularly for men’s designer shirts, there will always be a few in the collection which play off of basic colors and patterns. A simple charcoal pinstripe on a white button down shirt, for instance, will hold up to any season, and nearly any occasion.
Once a man owns four or five classics which will serve as a base, then it may be time to add one or two pieces to the wardrobe which will stand out. Even within this, it is important to keep with one’s general sense of style, though. For a person with simple taste, look for elements like trims added to collars and cuffs to add personality without overwhelming.
